With regard to Altea - what a great place if you want to experience a holiday resort that still retains a great deal of Spanish charm.

There are 2 or 3 expat bars but these are best avoided! The only one I would recommend was the Ritz on the front in Albir (although expats of all nationalities). Very stylish cafe bar serving all manner of snacks from Dutch meatballs through to American sandwiches. Good food, friendly service and a great place to people watch.

In general the bars are very Spanish and very little English is spoken - so you may need to brush up on your Spanish if you want to drink in some of these charming bars (don't worry as everyone was incredibly patient as they prefer you to try and make mistakes than just speak English!).

The best tapas bar was Xeito on the front. Lovely service and a range of about 15 tapas to try (the croquetas and flamonquinnes were very tasty).

We didn't have a bad meal in all the time we were there as we tended to eat in the Spanish restaurants on the front. Amazing fish dishes and some wonderful steaks.

Gula Gula also on the front was a pricier restaurant (e80 for apertifs, 2 courses, wine, water and coffees) but worth every cent.

The old town is beautiful and must be visited but the bars and restaurants are much more expensive. However some of the bars are extremely atmospheric and we ate some delicious pasta in L'Obrador - a lovely restaurant with a wonderful host.
