We decided to take a vila holiday for a change to relax in luxury with our own pool. After trawlling through the hundreds of possibilities we decided to book Villa Casa Mwinda as it appeared to fit the bill perfectly.
Altea is advertised everywhere as a sleepy unspoilt traditional town with a good variety of bars and restaurants. What they don't tell you is that Altea is the red light district of the Costa Blanca and the approach to the villa took you straight through the middle of it.
We were stopped on two occasions trying to get to our villa on our arrival by both male and female prstitutes and only managed to get rid of them by driving straight at them almost running them over. So much for a nice family location.
However this was not the worst experience that we had. On arrival at the villa it was apparent this was no luxury accomodation. It was advertised as having air conditioning but on opening the doors the heat hit you as there was only one small unit in the lounge and none anywhere else in the villa.
Also the smell of the place hit you straight away and it was obvious it hadn't been cleaned. The kitchen still had food remnents everywhere and the lounge floor was covered in food etc. Worse still came when we inspected the bedrooms as there were hairs from the previous guests still in the beds and on the pillows as well as saliva stains etc. It was obvious the linen hadn't been changed. The smell was also overpowering and can only be described as how a very old damp house that hasn't been lived in would smell like. The bathroom looked quite presentable until we looked up and noticed the cobwebs everywhere with huge spiders in them and the towels provided were old and rough.
At this point I decided there was no way we could stay here and contacted the booking agents. They were extremely helpful and managed to contact the owners who came straight up to the villa to see us. They said it wasn't as bad as we were making out but did agree it was dirty and hadn't been cleaned for some time and that the cleaner hadn't done her job. The owner asked if they could arrange to get it cleaned for us but we refused as there was no way it could have been got up to the standard that it had been advertised as. At this point we handed back the keys and left.
Unfortunately we tried for hours to find a hotel for the night in the area without success and spend it in our hired people carrier.
The next morning we carried on along the coast to Denia and found a lovely hotel called the Daniya at which we spent the rest of our holiday (see seperate review).
To the owners and booking agents credit upon our return home there was a cheque for a full refund with no dispute. However the experience has put us off booking a villa in the future.
