This year we tried something different and booked flights and accomodation separately. Flights - Outbound;Ryanair Liverpool to Murcia Inbound;Jet2 Murcia to Manchester.

First time we'd booked budget airlines and no complaints whatsoever. Excellent service on both, new aircraft and attentive staff. No delays outbound, slight delay on return flight however time was made up inflight so little difference overall. So to La Zenia.....

Had read a few nightmare stories about crime levels and poor (or non-existant) accomodation. We booked through holiday-rentals.co.uk and had no problems whatsoever. Booking agents Gena and Kevin were excellent, constantly in touch by email and answered all our questions promptly. They arranged the transfers and on our arrival the minibus and driver were waiting.

15 minutes to resort. Booked a 4 bedroom apartment - set on 2 floors and very comfortable. Kitchen fully equipped including washing machine, TV with around 30 channels (incl Sky Sports and main Uk channels, part air con and 3 terraces with bbq. Amapolis IV is an urbanisation of around 170 apartments, mix of residents, holiday lets and holiday homes. Good pool area, everyone was very friendly. Secure area, we were given a key for the main gates as well, meaning the only people on site were those supposed to be.

La Zenia is fairly small - a few shops but enough bars and restraunts, all very reasonably priced. There are 3 supermarkets (Consum, Lidl, Mercadona) all open well into the evening.

Recommendations -

Crusoes - only place we ate at twice. Excellent food, don't be deceived by it's location, well worth a visit. Meal for 8 with 2/3 drinks each and wine was around 120 euros (£84)

Alejandros - Pricier, similiar meal to above was around 160 euros. Again, good value for 8 adult meals with drinks.

Chinese Wok - 9.5 euros each. 4 courses inc main course cooked to order by chef. Choose your fresh meat and veg, sauce and chef cooks it for you. Good fun!

Commercial Centres on outskirts of town including bars and restraunts-

The 3 Camels - Great value for money meals and good quiz night on Wednesdays. Very friendly ex-pats

Viallis - Set meal, 3 courses 11 euros per head inc drink

Most of nightlife centred around Paddy Point. Irish bar very busy at night. Lots of Irish bars, good atmosphere in the evenings.

Beach at La Zenia very nice, however sea can be dangerous. Very rough on one day and 2 men were said to have drowned on the next beach. Be careful and take heed of the flags. Well maintained with full lifeguard cover. On other days sea was tranquil and good for swimming, kids playing etc. Couple of swimming pool areas worth a visit. This can get pricey though as charges approx 7 euros per person for swimming and sunbed. You cannot take food and drink in so if you're there all day a family of 4 will probably pay around 60 euros for the day.

Only went to Cabo Roig once - small beach and harbour, plenty of bars on main strip.

Torrevieja - think of Blackpool twinned with Towyn and you're there. Very dirty shopping area, loads of graffiti (it is Spain I suppose)and best avoided. Sea front wasn't too bad and good evening market for gifts, hair braiding etc but one 4 hour visit was enough.

Overall, well impressed and good value for money. We paid around £750 per family of 4 for accomodation, flights, transfers here and in Spain. We booked our flights quite late so could easily have knocked another £150 off that!!! As Pasqual, one of the local beach sellers would say ";Cheap as chips, Rodney";!!

this is not a review on accomadation, this is to ask anyone that has been to southern spain this summer and has come back with an illness, we went out to torrevieja in July for a week, since then my daughter has been seriously ill in hospital, she is paralised arms and legs, a rash on arms and legs, unlcerated mouth and down inside of throat, heart rate 160 beats a min ( should be 90 )fever, high blood pressure. The hospitals have done all the tests they can possibly do, which have all come back neg, even a M.R.I.scan was negative, she is on the road to recovery, but we, ourselves and the hospital would like to hear from anyone who has been to spain and had these symptoms, would you please e-mail me on the address below. Thankyou.
