Excellent hotel! This was our first time on the Almerian coast and liked it. The hotel is pretty big which is good as it means a lot of choice for dinner and good entertainment. It is right on the beach, make sure you pay extra for a sea view!

"The Holiday That Never Was"

Both my husband and I did not like the hotel very much. The restaurant was not to our liking, we had trouble in finding a seat and most of the time when we needed a cup or teaspoon we had to stand and wait for the staff to bring them. We have been on a 3* half board holiday and had better service in the restaurant. We thought the friendliness of the bar staff and reception staff was very nice towards us both. The cleanliness of the rooms was also very good and the room was cleaned daily. The entertainment was all in spanish and most of the people who were there was either spanish or german. There wasn't many english pubs or cafes (about two of each) and it isn't a place or a hotel that we would go back to again.

Having checked the reviews we were prepared for flies but, come on, there are more flies probably in Suffolk if you sit outside near vegetation. The resort is excellent and yes it is a bit quiet but if you look for it you will find nightlife. Theo's e.g. has a fun night on Sundays with Dermot in drag, you would be happy to pay for entertainment like this but it's all free. Karaoke with some good singers the rest of the week. There are other bars with music as well. Walking in the sunshine is a pleasure as the area is flat and the promenade stretches for miles in either direction - right to the nature park and left to the town hall and castle. The other odd thing that we noticed was that cars actually stopped at zebra crossings all the time and people never seemed to be rushing about. The hotel itself is first class, and I can't for the life of me, see how some people on this site can complain. Service is excellent, the staff are helpful and friendly and the food is something else. The chefs prepare everything in front of you and for English tastes, the bacon is superb and the eggs must be free range to look and taste like they do. The variety is huge and unless you have iron willpower you will put on weight even if you do like walking. The swimming pool is olympic size and was warm in September but not quite so warm in April. No problem with space to swim. In fairness the resort and the hotel seems to suit older people and the entertainment in the hotel is the usual keyboard, spanish singers mostly, albeit very good. Once a week there is a show and the magic act has to be seen. Our friends who came with us in September are very impressed and will be going back again for sure. Now the best part, 10 days half board in a 4* hotel for £290 p.p. - £260 in April. Using Fleetwaytravel who utilise Easyjet or in our case Ryanair, absolutely no delays and an excellent on time flight made for a very enjoyable holiday.

This was the second time we have stayed at the Sabinal. The location is perfect (right on the beach. Beautiful clean rooms and public area's.
There were only two disapointments:-
(1)The food was not upto the very high standard on our previous visit (2003).
(2)The service from the Direct Holiday Rep was appalling. We booked an excurtion to Vicars Market and ended up at a local Market next to the Airport. Very disapointing!

All the Staff at the Sabinal are very friendly and can't do enough to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. I thing a special mention should be made of the Reception Staff, they were excellent.

The resort is very flat (ideal for people who are less mobile, like me) Plenty of Bars,Restaurants serving good food.

Firstly, this resort is very quite, if you are looking for any sort of nightlife, forget it.

The Sabinal is in a reasonably good location, and although the beach and sea are nothing special its just a few steps away.

Spotlessly clean, good food with good choice and the staff are mostly ok.

Bad things, well the flies, they are not as bad as some say, but be warned!!!!!!

Just returned from 2 weeks in this resort. Would not go back again in August the Hotel seemed to cater mainly for the Spanish. It was definitely not a four * hotel. The maitre d was stood at the entrance to the Dining Room each evening to greet people, mainly the young Spanish Girls, and never one turned away anyone not suitably dressed. On at least 3 occasions couples came in dressed in wet swimming attire. This was very unfortunate for the people who had to sit at the tables after them with wet seats and sandy floors. There should be a certain dress code for any dining room not least a four star.

Food edible and a varied variety but it seemed as if we where in a school canteen with the noise. We paid a deposit for free towels (refundable) but not told that we had to pay 1 euro each to have them washed, free I think not. Notice outside in pool area about reserving beds. Totally ingnored, and towels where on the beds at six in the morning and I might add these where English people. Who wants to get up at that time to put towels out. Some holiday that would be!

Stick the the usual Costa's they are much cleaner and better maintained.

Anyhow wouldn't go again would rather pull my finger nails out.

We have just returned today from a super holiday at the Hotel Hesperia Sabinal.
This is a truely family friendly hotel, with very high standard of cleanliness and comfort.
The food was excellent, with a wide choice of dishes, cooked freshly in front of you in an open buffet style.
Staff were professional, friendly and helpful.

While neither of us are disabled, we noticed that the hotel was very well equiped to help disabled guests enjoy their holiday and staff went out of their way to make them welcome. The resort itself is ideally suited to anyone in a wheelchair, as it has a flat promenade which stretches for miles along the beach front.

The beach is a course clean yellow sand, which is cleaned daily. There is a lifeguard station just beside the hotel which is next to the beach.

We chose a superior room with sea view, which could only be described as exceptional.

I would like to make a small point about the flies mentioned by other reviewers.
These are not of the biting variety and are fruit flies which are like small house flies. They can be mildly irritating if you are eating out of doors, but there are not enough of them to spoil an otherwise excellent resort. I certainly plan to return.

We stayed in the Sabinal in May and the worse things were the flys! If you go the beach you are not bothered by them as much. We travelled as a family for a 65th birthday and thought the hotel was very nice. Some of the rooms were a bit small but very clean and the staff were very friendly. If you are travelling with a young baby, take your own travel cot as the cots are unsafe. Thanks to Sandra and Francissco who made mealtimes inthe hotel fun for our baby. We recommend Collisimo bar facing the hotel. Happy hour from 8 till 10.30 and Carlos is a lovely host. We also went to Gerados bar which is 5 mins walk away from the hotel. Cheap beer and lovely, cheap food. Thanks Raymondo!! We went to Becketts which is next to Gerardos for the 65th birthday meal and that was very nice indeed.

The resort attracts a lot of Spanish and as we went in May there where a lot of older people so it was quiet. A lovely place, not too overcrowded and the beach is lovely and clean but shingle. If you like to walk you can walk for miles along th promenade at the back of the hotel. If you go out the back and to the left you will walk to the port and if you are lucky, will see a Spanish wedding at the castle.

I read the reviews on here before I booked the holiday, seeing the comments about the flies I thought people just liked to find reasons to moan and felt sure they were exaggerated. Take my word for it.they are not! There were flies everywhere, they were an absolute nuisance. It was particularly bad around the hotel pool area and made it impossible to relax. You could not lie and sunbathe for more that 30 seconds before a fly landed on your lip or eye or hit your ear. It was almost like mental torture!
If you had any lunch, no matter where you were, you had to eat it as quickly as you could whilst waving flies away. It was also necessary to keep a beer mat over your drink!

The beach was the best place to escape the flies but it was almost £5 a day for two sun loungers. The also come with a parasol which does not fold down or move so unless you want to sit in the shade you have to constantly re-locate you chair around it! If you can stand the flies the loungers buy the pool are free and there are loads of them. The hotel was full while we were there and no matter what time of day there were always loungers available. There are also daytime activities that take place around the pool such as darts, rifle shooting, pool, water polo and other games.

The best thing about this holiday was by far the food. We were half board and found the food in the hotel excellent with lots of choice. There really is something to suit everyone's taste and it was all freshly cooked and delicious. It is buffet style so you just help yourself and can have as much as you like. Breakfast is 8am-10am, dinner is 7pm-10pm. The restaurant is big with plenty tables so no matter what time you go there will always be a seat.

Besides the flies, another down side to the holiday was the resort. It's not very pleasing to the eye and there is smell of sewerage around. But the main problem was that we found far too quiet, there was little to do during to day time and even less of an evening. The hotel has evening entertainment but it is not very good, most nights it is a Spanish singer. We though that the best place to go was a bar called 'Theo's', which is a five-minute walk from the hotel.

The hotel itself was clean and comfortable, only problem that we found was the noise. The rooms and corridors are very echoic and the walls are so thin that we often got woken by people returning to their rooms of an evening. If you are unlucky enough to get inconsiderate neighbors you would never get a wink of sleep and a lie in is out of the question.

To sum up, the hotel was nice but spoiled by bad location. This resort is predominantly full of pensioners. It is definitely not a good place for young or middle aged people and would be best avoided.
On the whole, we had a nice holiday as we are the kind of people who 'make the most of it', but we won't be going back and wouldn't recommend it to our friends or family.

The Hotel Sabinal was nice except we did ask for a double bed and got a twin. The hards were rather hard.

Thought previous reviewers were being a bit over the top about the flies, but after sitting round the pool and spending a lot of our time swotting the flies we now know why they were mentioned. You have to be up at 6am to get a sunbed by the pool !!! Did spend some time on the beach but seemed permanently windy and sea was rough.

The food was nice, but repetitive - they never seem to put much flavour in their food in Spain wherever you go.

We visited Aguadulce (about 8 miles away) much quieter and the beach was lovely.

Theos music bar is worth a visit as only round the corner from the Sabinal and kept my hubby happy with Karaoke every night but also on Friday and Saturday nights the reps fun night, with party games etc. We went before the season had really got started so not much else happenng. I had an enjoyable holiday and would go again - hubby not so impressed - he preferred Benidorm but then there is no accounting for taste !!!!!! I would recommend it as very spanish and pleasant people, rooms are very clean and are done every day by a lovely maid.

We can only re-iterate that which has previously been said about this hotel.

The choice of food was excellent and I can be quite a fussy eater. The hotel room, we opted for a superior room with sea view, was great and the double bed could easily have slept three adults. All in all a wonderful hotel with great facilities situated directly on the promenade. However, there are over 500 bedrooms in this hotel, it is very very large and therefore very noisy all the time. It was difficult finding a table at mealtimes and you could never have a ";quiet"; meal because loud, mainly Spanish voices all around totally invaded your space.

The outdoor pool and garden area were filled with loungers, chairs and tables but the usual towels were out from the crack of dawn and although notices forbidding this are all around the rule is not enforced. Even though we went in October this year there were many many flies and they became a real nuisance. Would we reccommend this hotel? Most definately if the points we have made are of no concern.

Would we visit again? No, I don't think so, it was that little bit too large and impersonal for us but for the younger set,a great hotel.
