We arrived at the barcelo punta umbria on july 6th for a two week stay all inclusive, the journey from the airport via mini bus took 2hrs but we hoped this was worth it, alas not, although the hotel was lovely, food excellent and amenitiies truly worthy of four star the holiday was a let down.
The hotel was full of spanish families and children making it hard to relax, the staff catered to their needs and left us brits waiting for any sevice. Their dislike of us was apparent all through the holiday. The hotel bordered a nice beach but the walk into town was a good 30mins which in the heat was hard and when got there was scruffy and again very hostile towards us. we had read the reviews and thought that the unspoilt costa is what we wanted, be warned the grass is greener and we craved for a touch of the other costas.
In all the holiday was expensive and could have tolerated it more if been a cheap last minute deal as 2 weeks there there is an ordeal not a holiday. I can appreciate they want to kep it for them but quite frankly thay can keep it. If this is top of your next holiday wish list scrub it out it just aint worth it from someone who is a season traveller.(The unspoilt Costa i will visit when its spoilt.)

This hotel was wonderful in every respect. I have never seen such a wide selection of such excellent food - something for everyone. Our room was cleaned everyday and towels changed. The sheets/bedding was changed three times during our week's stay. The pool was just fantastic and there was plenty of sunbeds. Hotel staff spoken little if no English but this was not a real problem.
We were extremely disappointed in the resort itself. Little or no English spoken and we got the impression they were not interested in tourists or perhaps just British tourists. In the areas around the hotel there was rubbish everywhere. Skips were provided for the local community but it just seemed easier to leave it laying around in the streets. It is obvious the Spanish do not clear up after their dogs - the streets were littered with dog excrement -so beware if you venture out after dark.
If this area wants to become a popular resort for all nationalities then it needs to clean up its act. It may currently be OK for the Spanish, Italians, Germans, etc. but us Brits expect higher standards of cleanliness.
I would recommend hiring a car to get about. Seville is about 2 hours away from the resort and back into Portugal is about an hour.
If you are happy just to sit by the pool, go to the beach and enjoy extremely good quality food and drink then this hotel is certainly for you.
If you are looking for something more from your holiday then I would forget about Isla Cristina.

A mile from the small Spanish working town, appealing as it hasn't changed for tourists. 4/5* every facility, indoor/outdoor pools, sauna, jacuzzi, beauty treatments, massage, etc.
