An Introduction To Gran Canaria

Gran Canaria, an island of contrasts from the cultural and historical north to the concrete tourists resorts of the hotter south of the island.

Most tourists head south for the warmer climate and the night life and there is plenty on offer down there. Accommodation ranges from budget self catering apartments to luxury five star hotels.. The resort choices are Playa Del Ingles the larger of those available with a vast range of entertainment on offer, the impressive sand dunes with 7 miles of unbroken beach offering water sports and sunbeds for hire. Further south at the tip of the island is the old fishing village or Puerto Rico. Converted to a resort extensively in recent years this is a small place with a varied yet quiet night-life and excellent beach though many could find the cliff face hotels and apartments unmanageable. Further round is Puerto Mogan described as 'Little Venice' for the main river which runs through it and the many bridges across it. Again small but with enough on offer to keep older people and families amused.

Las Palmas is the cosmopolitan capital. You would feel out of place wandering through it's many department stores here in your beach ware as the Canarians see shopping as a serious business and one worth dressing up for. Prices are over all cheaper in the North though the temperature can be up to 10? cooler.

The centre of the island is well worth a visit with the many and varied landscapes created from centuries of volcanic activity. A car is a must to explore away from the tourist areas.
