we recently came back from the altamar, self catering, the location for the europa center is great onlt 5 mins walk , there is a spar on site also, the rooms are basic but there is everything you require, you will have to hire a kettle though, also the tv is 15euros a week, the balconys are big , so if you want you can just lie there all day, the walk to the main center is about 25 mins,or 3.5 euros, the good thing is the free wifi in the reception, overall i would recommend this hotel, the downfall if any is the lift is rubbish, breaks down a few times, they need a weight alarm in it , as people just keep getting in,

Hotel was lovely and clean and staff were really friendly. We went halfboard and were impressed with he food it was different every night and plenty of choice. We travelled as a family with 2 children and the apartment was big enough but not impressed with the sleeping facilites the sofa bed and put up bed were not of good quality and children found them really uncomfutable so we had to all bunk up in the twin beds thankfully we have young children. The only other problem was the lift it broke down twice while we were there and it really was essential, however it was repaired really quickly. The pools were great and we had quite a bit of trouble getting the kids out.

This was a fantastic holiday locaton. The apartments were clean and well kept. There was nightly entertainment and a kids club during the day for kids aged between 5 and 13. It is quite a distance to the beach, so a taxi was required. There were plenty of shops and restaurants within walking distance. Watch out for the touts at the beach trying to sell time share!! There were 2 beaches on either side of he apartments, but not really close enough to walk to. The food was good, but not much choice. Altogther a great holiday though and no need to leave the site as it had everything we needed!!

This Hotel was brilliant, everything you need al in one place, Our family stayed here in 2008 and has been one of the best hotels we have stayed in, we really wished we had gone all inclusive rather than self catering, but the staff here were brilliant I loved the children's club I was never away from it, I made lots of new friends, mum and dad enjoyed the entertainment at night and myself and my brother loved the disco's at night. You will be well looked after here by all. Bingo during the day, that tune still haunts me lol. We bought the disco CD and still regulary use it, brings back the memories of a fantastic holiday, definitely reccomend this hotel, scenery is out of this world as hotel is on the hillside overlooking amadores bay.

Very nice hotel and staff were very friendly.

We went self catering but the food available within the hotel was spot on.

Night time entertainment was mainly for the kids but was fun to watch and the hotel was only a 10 minute walk from the centre of Puerto Rico.

We stayed for a week at Altamar and had a great time. The hotel was better than expected and the apartments were clean.

One disappointment is that there was no oven in the room, just a microwave. It made it difficult when trying to cook oven food sold in the local spar shop.

Saying that though the food in the restaurant was really nice.

To go to Altamar you will need to like using steps as it is quite hilly, but well worth it.

We've just returned from a 2wk holiday, we had a fantastic time. We have 2 teenage boys who had a ball and if they're happy then we're happy!!! The food was varied always something to suit everyone, the rooms were clean and equipped with a fride/freezer etc even tho we were AI. There was never any problem getting served at the bar, the staff in the bar and restaurant work so hard. The entertainment staff and kids club also do a great job. Would go back to the Altamar quite happily!!

"A great week's holiday"

Overall Hotel Rating:

Very Good

Open quote

The hotel is set on a hillside and comprises of 9 floors. Reception, shop and a small amusement arcade on the top floor. The restaurant, bar, both swimming pools and the sports court in the middle. Each floor can be accessed via 1 of two lifts.

Our single bedroom appartment was spacious enough until you get the 4th bed out from underneath the sofabed. The 'living' room then becomes quite cramped. However, we did not expect a large room for the money we paid. Room is equiped with a fridgefreezer, microwave, two ring hob, a filter coffee make! but no kettle. The bathroom has a shower, toilet, basin and foot cleaner (bidet!).

The balcony/terrace was very roomy, and had a table with four chairs and two sun loungers. All rooms have a sea view.

We were all inclusive. Meals in the reataurant are all self service buffet. Enough choice to keep us happy for a week away and quality was good although sometimes not as hot as we would have wished. The variety of dishes is not brilliant but we did not pay for a 56 star hotel so did not expect a 5 star service. Drinks included Tropical lager, 'locally' made vodka, gin, whiskey, rum, brandy, Baileys, Malibu, Red, White and Rose wine, sangria along with Pepsi, Fanta, cold water and slush in about 8 flavours. You can upgrade to all inclusive at anytime during your stay for 30 euro's per adult. I did not notice the price for a child. However we paid less than that per person per day for the whole weeks stay in the hotel. (www.lowcostholidays.com)

There are two pools one appears to have a pool side bar but this was not open whilst we were there. If you are at the pool furthest from the restaurant bar then it can be a chore to collect drinks, especially if staff are enforcing the one drink per person per visit to the bar policy. This was never enforced during our stay although sometimes we were restricted to collecting two.

Entertainment starts at around 14:00 with football, basketball, scuba diving lessons, 'hamsterball' in the pool, games around the pool table and bingo. Hamsterball was 5 euros for about 10 minutes, scuba lesson was free and bingo is 1 euro a card with all money going into the prize fund. There is a childrens club but we did not use this. Evening entertainment begings at 19:30 and runs til' midnight. The varied act's were all very good with 'Big Gazza' chipping in with 'Play Your Cards Right', Pop quizzes and other games throughout the evening which ends with Karaoke.

We only visited the beach once, nice enough but too far to walk. The taxi was about 2.50 euros each way and only takes a couple of minutes. We enjoy snorkeling but there is very little to see under the water.. The beach slopes off quickly and close in along part of the stretch are some rocks.

A 5 minute walk gets you to a small shopping centre with a good variety of shops and bars. Again, we only went once and were told that there is a larger centre not too much further away.

All in all an enjoyable holiday, the hotel is kept very clean, staff are friendly is you are to them and food and drink is of a decent standard.

we have just returned from a 2 week stay at the Altamar which should of only been a 1 week stay but with the volcanic ash we had to extend the stay. the 1st week was All inclusive which was a complete waste of money as the food was that bad, what ever did not get eaten at the previous meal would be reheated for the next meal, its a big of a joke when you get chicken nuggets for breakfast. only 1 drink at the bar perperson at any one time(have you tried dragging the kids out the pool just to get a drink) also if there was a paying customer waiting they would be served first. the beer had more water than Alcohol in. the second week we chose Bed and Breakfast because we was eating out all the time, on the day we were due to depart at the end of the first week we asked how much to stay on for another week which they quoted us £375 BB we went on the Website 10 yards away from the desk and quoted £270 we questioned this and they said they cant match the price so we booked on line and took the conformation slip and we stayed another week(clearly they were trying to stiff the brits out of extra money in time of a crisis. on a poistive note the swiming pool was very good

"Lovely holiday"

Just returned from a lovely week at puerto rico and stayed at the altamar hotel. We arrived on 1st Feb to slightly cloudy weather however it was still warm. Felt very welcome by the recpetion staff who handed us our all inclusive wristbands, hotel keys and directions to our rooms. The lifts came in handy as there was lots of steep steps! Room was lovely, clean and spacious- also thoroughly cleaned 3 times during our 7 night stay. We were very grateful of the free bus pass which was given to us on the first day as this entitle us to free journeys to Amadores Beach and the main city of Puerto Rico. Food in the restaurant was very nice, lots of choice, different food each day. Unlike the many reviews complaining about the bar staff being rude, we did not experience this. They were all very welcoming and friendly with ourselves. However, during meal times we did find that some of the waitress/waiters did not service us as well as the paying customers. But this did not really affect us as the food was buffet style and we could order our own drinks at the bar ourselves. Overall the holiday was lovely and we thoroughly enojoyed our stay at Altamar. We would definitely go again!!

We went as a party of four to the Altamar, on a week all inclusive holiday. On the whole it was a very enjoyable holiday. The food was good, and the entertainment staff were brilliant, with Big Gazza being the life and soul of the party. The evening entertainment was varied with some good acts. Our apartment was spacious and clean. All the apartments appreared to have massive balconys with sunbeds. The Pools were clean and there were plenty of sunbeds around them. The only downside was going to the Bar for drinks. The Bar staff were the most miserable people that I have ever seen, the only time I saw any of them raise a smile, was when they saw a customer with Euros in their hand. The all inclusive people then became second class in preferrence to the person with hard cash. I felt like a beggar, dispite the fact that we had paid for everything up front. When you did get served, the drinks were just thrown on the bar at you and the staff member just blanked you and walked away. We were only allowed one drink per person at the bar, ie, we sat the wives at a table outside the bar, and went inside to get their drinks and ours. The Bar man would only gve us our drinks, the wives had to go and get their own. I think that I can say that that was the only downside of the week. I think that we would go there again.

unless you plan on staying within the apartment/ hotel facilities, budget for taxi transfers as you will need taxis to get around even for a visit to the beach as the hotel is at the very top of a very steep hill which proved to much for me after the first day when my leg felt like jelly ( and im not the exercise shy type) The rooms were fanatasic and very spacious. even though we were half board the room was equipped with all the self catering facilities including a coffee maker. due to the position of the apartment all rooms had a sea view. food wise we only ate breakfast at altamar as we prefered to go to restaurants in the evening ( it was cheaper to book half board then SC in case your wondering) but we did try the food one night and its not that bad its just not the best and from what we saw there was a wide choice of meats and fish but not much veggie options. however the puddings were very yummy. overall i would say that this is a nice hotel and i have no complains. if you do stay choose to stay at this hotel i recommend visiting the restuarants and the little irish/english bars on the beach front for a few cheap pints during the day ( i think the close early in the evening due to lack of demand)
