I just got returned from a week's holiday in the Villa Canaima and it was one of the nicest places I've ever stayed in.
I booked it last minute and was a bit nervy when I read the last review posted of it. Thought it might be suited for older people (no offense) but there was a great mix of people. When my boyfriend and I arrived at the resort we were checked in quickly and given a free 2 liter of water which I thought was nice. You do have to pay for the kettle lead but its not expensive, I didn't bother just used the saucepans in the room. You can get a safe which is quite big and you can rent adaptors if you forgot to bring them (as I did) they are only 3 euros. There is a TV with Sky movies, sky sports and sky news.

The apartment is big enough and has air conditioning (have to pay) but the rooms are cool enough. The pool isn't that big, it has a baby pool, shallow end and deep end. It's not as bad as the complex isn't huge. I found that it was freezing going in to but it was grand after a couple of mins but that was because it was so hot! There is a road next to the apartments but it isn't as busy as I thought it would be. There is a restaurant and bar on site and the couples who run that are lovely. The food is nice and very cheap. The rooms got cleaned everyday and fresh towels were provided as well.

The shopping centre in Matagorda is about 5-10mins walk and they have a couple of good bars and restaurant but you'd have more selection in Puerto Del Carmen which is only about 5 mins in a taxi and there is a taxi rank about 50 meters from the apartments Its about 4 -4.50euros to get into Puerto Del Carmen if you wanted to walk it would take about 20-30 mins but its a nice walk.

I would recommended this place to anyone and will certainly be going back next year.

Very happy with Villa Canaima. Rooms and pool area were spotless and cleaned regularly, extremely help staff. The pool was quite small thhough and the water temp would take your breath away. A decent comercial centre with a few shops bars and restaurants is about a 3 min walk away, if looking for a livelier time get a taxi to PDC for less than 4 euro. A lovely blue flag beach is just a 5 min walk.

Arrived late, flight having being delayed leaving Dublin but was met by the owner (Fatima) of the apartments, welcomed, given safety deposit key, shown apartment and discovered free water left for us which was great as it was late and all the shops were closed. Have stayed in these apartments three years ago and found them excellent then, they are even better now.

The kitchens have been totally refurbished. Alex is still on reception, as friendly and helpful as ever (he even remembered us from three years ago!). His wife Ana now runs the snack bar which opens daily from 11 am to 8 pm (we will always put pineapple in our ham and cheese toasted sandwiches now), this was not available at our last stay. The Budget travel rep. Lesley also very friendly and helpful.

The apartments are still cleaned to a very high standard, towel change every two days, linen change weekly and the pool and surrounding area sparkling clean. Matagorda seemed much busier, more tourists, the commercial centre is thriving, the Spar is good value once you don't expect the staff to treat you like a human. Sirocca restaurant was disappointing, throw the poorly prepared and cooked food at you, then get you out to seat the next lot. The Mexican restaurant is gone, replaced by a Japanese, did not try it as fish was the main dish. Lovely Greek restaurant also with only Greek dishes.

Took a trip to Teguise market, colourful and good bargains; to Arriceife for shopping - great bargains in the sales in Momu, Zara, restaurant staff again awful! Trip to Biosfera Plaza in Pdel C - some good shops, some expensive, kids tried the giant elastic bands on trampolines - great fun, e5 per child for 10 minutes. Went to see new dolpin/whale/porpoise museum in Puerto de Calera - a rip off, e 37 and that included student and child reductions - you would learn more about fish from watching Finding Nemo! Puerto de Calero itself beautiful, harbour full of yachts, good resonably priced restaurants with genuine Canarian food, especially deserts - try Bienmesabe. Hired a car from Auto Feber, can book on internet, also have office in centro commercial Matagorda - e 243 for a fortnight for a Nissan Micra. Petrol is so cheap towards here! Took a day trip to Playa Blanca in the south to Playa Flamingo, a sheltered manmade beach, which is like a warm lagoon by the evening and is perfectly safe for all to swim. Matagorda beach wide and sandy, but the sea more rough with stones in places. However it is a blue flag beach with a life guard on duty.

All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will be back. The courtesy room is a big plus when your flight home does not leave until the evening. Thankfully that flight was on time. Would travel with Budget and Futura again. Hope they keep Villa Camaima in their brochure.

I arrived at about 7.30 on a Saturday evening to find the reception closed. However, there were 2 notices pinned up with my name in big red writing apologising for the closed reception and giving me a number to ring. I rang and about 20 minutes later a charming lady arrived, opened up, checked me in and hung around for 30 minutes or so in case I had any queries or difficulties. I'm glad to report I didn't.

The apartment was superb! Very comfortable living room, bright and airy twin bedroom, fully specified bathroom, well equipped kitchen and spacious balcony. If I hadn't known it had been built in 1990 I would have said I was the first occupant. It was absolutely spotless!

I did not have cause to visit the reception area during my stay except on arrival and departure but it looked well equipped, clean and airy and the 2 staff members I met were extremely pleasant and spoke excellent English.

A 3-4 minute walk away is the Centro Commercial, a complex with numerous restaurants, bars and a variety of shops including a good sized supermarket. Car rental was also available here.

It immediately adjoined the beach and what a beach! Matagorda is about halfway between Arricife and Puerto del Carmen and there is a beautiful sandy beach almost all the way along between the two. I noticed it had been awarded the EU Blue Flag and I can now see why. Whether for swimming, sunbathing or walking, it was perfect and if you didn't want to get sand between your toes, there is a beautiful walkway along its length also.

Fantastic Island, great resort, and top notch apartment. What more can I say except (with apologies to Governor Arnie), I'll be back!
