I never book a holiday without checking hols uncovered so I always try and repay them by posting a review.

The Resort
We always try and get away in Feb and have been to the Canaries and Lanzarote in particular many times. However,it was our first time in Los Picalos. It is a quiet resort with just a few bars and restaurants, with a good mixture of Spanish, English and even a German bar. Try Pulcinella, an Italian restaurant. We ate there twice. The beach is wide and sandy (nearer the sea) and again because of its quiet location the sunbeds on the beach are not piled on top of one another. The resort is in an ideal location for walking into Matagorda, where we have stopped previously, which again has a good selection of bars and restaurants. one I would recommend (although I cannot remember its name),it is Spanish and is situated under the New Inn in the square. It is excellent and even in Feb we were turned away as they were full and had people waiting. The resort is about 15 to 20 mins casual walk away.
Puerto del Carmen is about 30 to 35 mins casual walk but if you walk along the beach and cut the sweeping curve of the road out you will be there in under 30 mins. Taxis are plentiful and the rank is just where the coach drops you off for the apartments. Dont worry if there is not one there just stand a few minutes and one will turn up like magic! 3 to 4 euros into Puerto. The bus stop is very close too and they run every 20 mins. Puerto is busy and lively.Electrical goods are everywhere but there are many fake products. We took advice from residents and we bought a digital camera from Visanta (near 'The Barge Pub') delighted with the product and saved £40.00 without bartering, its not that type of shop.

Accomodation.
Very good. Basic accomodation but very clean and a good maid service. The room had free air conditioning in the living area and a ceiling fan in the bedroom. The bathroom had a shower over the bath for those who prefer baths. The swimming pool is gargantuan. The accomodation is split over two blocks with a smaller pool in the second block. The only odd thing was a lack of pool beds, but equally strangely most of the apartments were allocated two on their veranda so I dont suppose you can have both! The apartments are less than 5 mins walk fron the beach and resort facilities. We were self catering but they also offer half board which looked quite busy. There was nightly entertainment and daily events so if you have children I think this would also be ideal (there is a childrens pool as well)

Weather.
We have gradually pushed our winter break back from Jan because of the way climates are changing. We departed on the 22nd and the weather was fantastic all week. The sun was glorious and was so hot the sand would burn your feet.

Carnival.
There is a carnival on the last Saturday in Feb and it well worth seeing. We didnt stay to the end and just watched the procession but it starts around 4pm in Puerto and proceeds all the way to the old town with live music and a firework display around midnight.

We had a lovely relaxing holiday here.
The apartment was an immaculate, ground floor, 2 bedroomed, spacious, with own patio and tables and chairs.
No AC, but ceiling fans in bedrooms. AC to be installed in April 2007 throughout the complex (allegedly!)
The apts have 2 supermarkets nextdoor, and loads of restraunts closeby. Loads of menu choices for the wee ones, and a fuss made of them too.
The beach is across the road, its clean and has toilets and showers that were cleaned daily.
The bus stops for Arricefe and PDC are just outside the complex, as is the taxi rank. 3 euros into PDC for us by bus, and 10 euros to airport by taxi.
Don't go here if you want organised kids activities, and to meet other British families! Most of the clientele seemed to be German or Scandanavian families.
Lots of sunbeds at poolside, and daily pool cleaning too. Its a really nicely laid out set of apartments, but not a British haunt...good or bad thing depending on your opinion!
We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

We stayed in the Floresta apartments in July 2006 - we were delighted with the size of our apartment - much bigger than others we have stayed in of a similar rating .

The apartments were spotless, cleaned thoroughly everyday. The brochure had not mentioned air conditioning , but we had a unit in the main room and a ceiling fan in the bedroom which worked very well. The view from the apartments of the mountains was fabulous. The staff were very helpful, we had a problem with the electricity in our apt, which was resolved quickly and also gave us great help in locating a pharmacy on a sunday morning !There was 2 pool areas, but the smaller pool area looked a little grubby, we didn't use it as the beach is so near. The location is excellent as the beach is across the road and 2 supermarkets even nearer.

The beach is brilliant - the sand and water are really clean - the toilets on the beach are of hotel standard. Restaurants are great , the local chinese is very good value and a great fuss was made of the kids. The footpaths are buggy friendly with no hills - it is an ideal place for a family holiday - no noise , much calmer than neighbouring p del carmen !

We booked the holiday last minute and it was very cheap, so i was concerned that it may not be of a very high standard.I was proved very wrong,it was a brilliant complex, very clean and tidy, the rooms were massive plenty big enough with 2 kids.

There were actually 4 swimming pools, the 2 shown in the brochure are huge, and very well maintained. There are also 2 other pools that were the other side of the apartments, so you could take your pick.I would definatley go back again. The area was very small in playa de los picollos, and there wasnt much going on so we went out every night into the old town of puerto, which is lovely.Taxis were very cheap,4 euros to get there and the resturants overlooking the sea were amazing. The best part for me was the breeze of cool air that came with the 34oc heat every day, it keeps you cool and its great with young children.

I would now choose lanzarote for my holidays from now on as there is much more to explore and see.
