"excellent place to stay"

Operator: First Choice

In our opinion we had a fab week. One thing we didn't think was worth the money and that was visiting Palma and the Cathedrall.

Cala d'Or is a lovely town with a few nice beaches although they are smallish coves which can get very busy near the waters edge. There are an amazing amount of good restaurants in the town itself and also down at the marina. The shops consist of the usual souvenier type but there are also quite a few upmarket designer shops to choose from. We hired a car for three days and toured the east coast, up to Pollenca and visited Soller and Valldemosa. The scenery there is spectacular. What could be better than sitting down at the marina watching the luxurious boats come and go and enjoying a cold beer? A very laid back, relaxing time topped off with a great hotel. What more could anyone want?

OverallExcellent Hotel

Found this little gem of a hotel by chance. It's location is excellent. Five minutes from town centre and five minutes from the marina. Set in a quiet street, it was away from any noise. The owner of the hotel, Mark and his wife Brenda are the most friendly...

Cala D'Or used to be a sophisticated resort - it is now tacky and commercialised with elvis/robbie williams tribute acts and karaoke on every corner. Cheap tacky gift shops, every other bar showing british tv programmes, pie and chips and english breakfast at every turn. The once lovely central piazza full of charming restaurants and street artists is now crammed full of theme restaurants ("The Jungle" with plastic animals outside, "The Pirate") with PR people trying to drag you in at every turn. The ubiquitous fast food chain has arrived since we were last there which sums up the resort really. It's sold itself out. The only saving grace was the marina which we chose to walk to every evening, with lovely views, laid back bars, beautiful restaurants and classy service, not a PR person/egg and chips/unlimited spare ribs or union jack in sight. This part of Cala D'Or remains chic and sophisticated and I'd recommend it thoroughly.

If I'd wanted english food, tacky souvenirs and dodgy tribute acts I'd go to Benidorm - my husband and I have renamed Cala D'Or Calidorm - and its a crying shame.
