We stayed at the Holiday Inn (previously Crowne Plaza) in Bangkok. The hotel was absolutely fab, on Silom Road near to skytrain and Patpong market. Use tuk tuks they are very cheap. We went to Silom Village (on Silom road) one evening, a great place-from the outside it looks like a small indoor centre but when you go right to the back there is a number of small craft shops, and restuarants. They also put on a small show of traditional Thai dancing - well worth a visit. Food is good too - lots of seafood and reasonably priced. Visit the Grand Palace - its very beautiful and make your own way on the public boats and tuk tuk - it will cost you a quarter of the price than if you booked with your hotel rep. We also took the rice barge tour - which was a boat trip on the river with a delicious lunch of snacks and carved exotic fruits. We also went to a bar/restuarant which was 64 floors high - in an apartment building at the bottom end of Silom Road - what a fantatic sight of Bangkok at night. A great must - ask the receptionist at the hotel and they will direct you.
Phuket - we stayed at the Diamond Cliff Hotel - about 10-15 min walk from the main centre of Phuket - This hotel is quite luxurious - 3 pools, 7 restuarants set in a hillside. Best hotel I have ever stayed. The staff were wonderful and couldn't do enough for you. I would throughly recommend this hotel for anyone who wants a quiet/peaceful and luxurious hotel but within walking distance of the nightlife. Ask for a room with a view of the sea, its spectacular.
We went on a sea canoeing trip in caves -which was wonderful and visited James Bond Island.
The nightlife in Phuket is quite loud and noisy but there are enough quieter bars and restuarants to go to. Also try the freshly caught fish - its great.
Once you try the Far East you won't be satisfied with going to Europe again. We enjoyed the Far East so much that we are trying another island next year.
