In terms of places to eat, I don't think we had a bad meal for the whole 3 weeks we were in Thailand and I suggest that you just give places a try.
One thing we thought was really worthwhile was a trip up the Baiyoke Sky Hotel - the tallest building in Bangkok. Unlike the Empire State, there were no queues and it was a lot cheaper. Once up the top, there are great views of Bangkok and it is relatively quiet so you don't have to wait to get your photos.
Getting around in Bangkok is easy and cheap. We used taxis a fair bit as they were so cheap though we did venture on the canal on a boat once - it was certainly an experience but I think is really best left to the locals. River boats are easier, less having to leap on and off.
Found the Tuk Tuk drivers were best avoided, the time we decided to get one, he tried the trick of trying to take us to a jewelry shop on the way so we just got out.
The hotel DMA was excellent, clean and friendly. Breakfasts were pretty reasonable and self service so a pretty relaxed affair. We would certainly recommend this hotel. Although it is away from the tourist district, it was in close walking distance of the main shopping areas and good for finding places to eat in the evening.
After 5 nights we were ready to escape the dusty city for somewhere a bit quieter, but Bangkok is definately worth a visit.
