We had a brilliant time in Phuket and met some great people. Some of the bars we visited were fantastic with wonderful staff. The littered beach was dissappointing for us and so was the 8 days of rain after the Burmese Typhoon, which couldn't be helped. It would be lovely though to see somebody cleaning the rubbish from the beach on a daily basis.

We first came to Phuket in the mid 90's and have stayed here 3 times. Would I go back again? I think probably not. It's become a little over commercialised for us. I'm not looking to have a backpacking experience living on a dollar a day (certainly not with a three year old in tow) but I would like somwhere a bit more exclusive. Phuket used to be like that but not any more. If you are planning your first trip, then you probably won't be disappointed. It's just about exotic enough still to differentiate itself from the Costas but the march of globalisation stops for no-one and it's geting harder and harder to find a more unique experience that justifies the long flight from the UK. Now that Starbucks has arrived, I'm going to look elsewhere.
