This was a last minute - arrival on allocation job again - how much misfortune can an elderly mother (62) and workaholic kid (37!) have to be allocated the same hotel twice in 5 years? Was it not bad enough in Dec '99?! We were allocated Hill Diar then and strangely enough - nothing had changed! The surly staff on reception, behind the bar, in the restaurant - still there! The rotten carpets, the mould, bad food, bad/non-existant entertainment-animation, the cockroaches - still there! More worryingly.... the same excuses we were given in 99? ''All our other hotels are booked up'' - this is no reason whatsoever for us not being moved - I have worked within the travel industry since '99 and know that HillDiar is used as an overflow hotel and that no self-respecting holiday-maker on a budget should have to put up with conditions like THEY offer! Obviously, it is an old hotel and they DO have a hard-core of elderly, long standing fans (who overwhelme the bar!) but how this hotel is still being allowed to offer accomodation to new-comers beggars belief!

Hill Diar has one of the most beautiful beaches known to man at the back of the hotel and the resort in itself is OK. Locals can be kept in check with a few choice words and an attitude... but why is this hotel STILL being used? Needless to say - I refused the accomodation and was moved the next day after spending the night at the airport. Been there, done that, no wish for a repeat!

the hotel was basic and the staff wonderful but it was grubby and we did have cockroaches in our room on 3 occasions. The food was plentiful but not much choice. On the first day my son cut himself on broken tiles in the pool which meant we had to go to a chemist every day to get it dressed.

In Sousse itself we felt very safe the men look but they are not intimidating at all...you do get hassled by taxi drivers every 2 minutes asking do you need a ride but a no and a smile does the trick...the shops are a different story...there is no pleasure browsing because the of the constant harrasment,If they only realised they would sell much more by letting people browse!the fixed price shops are great though and we picked up a lot of nice things.

We only went for 1 week so we didn't do the Sahara trip but we did do the Camel Caravan and it was great...Highly recommended by us all.
We would go again because we feel there is so much more to see and do but next time we would stay in a different hotel.

We booked this holiday in January 2004 and was told it was in a nice area with entertainment etc, I made a point of asking about hassle from the local men as we have a 15yr old daughter and was told no problem, how wrong can you be, from day 1 she was constantly hassled, not a nice thing for a 15yr old to put up, and so she wanted to spend all her time in the hotel room even though the hotel was old and uncared for, going for a walk was like running the gauntlet with constant requests for her to join them at disco's etc.

On arrival in our resort/hotel the first thing that hits you is the smell I can't say what it is but I have never experienced anything like it before, the carpet that runs the length of the corridors outside the rooms is stained and dirty, the pool has broken tiles in the base and covered with larger loose tiles to hide this.

Our view consisted of used dirty nappies and rubbish although we could just see the sea, the food is almost non-existant, which to be honest was probably a good thing, we had to insist on eating elsewhere. On the first morning along with 4 other couples we asked to be moved, not a chance said our rep all of tunisia was booked solid, but hey the weather and location is great you should just get on with it, not a very helpful attitude to any of us.

Finally got moved second week to Hammamet a much better resort with not quite as much hassle, although it did still happen. To sum up DO NOT go to Hill Diar if you want a good holiday, choose Port El Kantoui or Jasmine Hammamet both much cleaner resorts.Ps Hotel has no enterainment either only hassle on beach and in hotel.
