"Hotel Altunakar Calypso review"
Overall Hotel Rating:
Just arrived back from my 1st visit to turkey and it was fantastic,
the people were very friendly and the hotel staff could not have been nicer. We went to celebrate our wedding aniversary and had a great time ondre the barman brought us a bottle of bubbly to celebrate which was very nice indeed. The place was very nice and their was lots to do. We are going beck next year with our children and my mum and dad, can not wait.
I would recomend the altunakar to anyone.

we arrived at this hotel at 5 am we went to our room to find no bed for our daughter, we complained they said we will get you a bed straight away... it never arrived.. after complaing over and over again it was 3 days before we got a cot, which had a hole in,, the paint was coming of and it was rusty.. im glad that she was not a new born baby..
the room was small.. the toilet wouldnt fill up after you had flushed it.. the manager was horrible to us because we hadnt bought anything out of his shop, we didnt even no he had a shop... we paid well over £1,000 for 2 weeks at this hotel and i definatly would not go back to.. the bedding was only changed twice in the 2 weeks we were there.. we had to ask for clean towels.. we spoke to 1 lady who arrived the same time as us and there wasnt even a room for her...
some of the staff were lovely especialy the man on a night we had to ask for our room key in turkish which was a laugh..the young girl on reception was dead missrable

This hotel was the type you see on holidays from hell - because it was just that.
When we arrived the door to the room and the balcony had been left open, obviously to try and get rid of the smell!. The walls were covered in mould and there was damp everywhere, the bathroom smelt and was dirty, also the shower had water runiing out (could not be turned off). There was rust where the radiator had leaked and the lock on the door was faulty. We also noticed that fire exit door was locked and had been painted over so there would have been no chance of getting out if there had been a fire. - Needless to say we refused to stay there, if that was the state of the room what must the kitchen have been like. Avoid this hotel at all costs.
We transfered to the Tuntas hotel, where eventually we had a wonderful holiday

Overall Hotel Rating:
We read a 2003 review of this hotel shortly before going on our holiday and i must admit it left us both slightly worried about what we were going to find when we got there. Tankfully these worries were soon proved to be unfounded.
from the moment we arrived we were greated with a warm welcome and the young lady who worked behind the reception very kindly carried our luggage to our room, a very neat and tidy room, (all be it quite basic, but what do you expect for the great price) It was clean it was comfotable it had a tidy bed that was made daily and a bathroom that was cleaned daily by cleaners who were always 100% polite an accomodating, contrary to former oppinion. Our towels were changed regulary as was the bed linnen and when towels weren't changed they were always left in some sort of impressive arrangement and i must point out that i never once saw any of the cleaners smoking on the corridors.
A slight down side is having to pay £3.00 per day for the air conditioning, but as we found out from talking to guests in other hotels this is not something designed just to make money in the Altunakar it is actually the average air conditioning price throughout most Altinkum accomodation.
I loved the way you could roll out of the hotel and straight onto a lovely stretch of golden sand that has everything you could possibly need nearby, lovely restaurants and cafes for a nice light lunch, the water activities and shops nearby for any necessary drinks or ice creams. We always enjoyed toppping the day off with an hour or so around a clean, (not pure salt water)pool, a pool that was cleaned and treated each night after it closed. I will admit the pool is small and by no means as is suggested, an olympic size, but it is more than adequate, as are the number of comfortable sun loungers available to guests.
Overall the only complaint i would have about my stay at the Altunakar goes to the tour opperators. Our rep 'deposited'us at the hotel on the Monday morning of our first week telling us she would be there for a welcome meeting that evening and that was the last we saw of here for the whole fortnight, no meeting, no chance to book excursions with her, no chance to discuss any possible problems or queeries, though thankfully there were none. even on the day of our departure we were picked up in a small mini bus by someone who wasn't our rep who then let us go on to the air port without her telling us our rep would meet us at the air port, we were met by a rep there- a My Travel' one when we had booked with Goldtrail??? And I also know from taking to others that their Goldtrail reps were also as invisible. Howevere that has to be the only down side in a truly brilliant holiday and that was masked by the helpfulness and friendlyness of the staff so our rep wasn't needed anyway.
A few tips though for any one who decides to go to Altinkim. Make sure you have at least one meal in the IStanbul Restaurant. the food there is amazing, the prices were the best we saw all holiday, which is really saying something and the service is fantastic. THe boys there definatley do their best to make sure you mel and your evening is up to the highest standards, and they always succeed. Trust me, if you eat there once I guarentee you'll go again and again. WE did!
One more thing. If you only decide to book one excursion while you're there make sure it's the jeep safari. It's a fantastic activity and the most fun grown ups and kids can have on any holiday. one extra tip though, make sure you take plenty of water containers, the bigger the better, and make sure they're full from the start.
What more to be said, but give Altinkum a trya dn make sure you find the Altinukar, it's cheap, friendly and clean and definatley thebest place I've stayed abroad.

Overall Hotel Rating:
Well what can I say - it was excellent. We decided to go to this resort after it was reccommended by a family member. We have two children who have very different interests and as this resort is family orientated with a little nightlife we though it would be perfect.
We got there and it was. We took a cheap holiday as we have paid a fortune before and had disaterous holidays. At least if we take a cheap one then have to fork out for extra's when we get there it doesn't matter so much!
Anyway, yeah this hotel is quite basic and yes the rooms aren't five star but we were in Turkey! I remember when this hotel would have been luxury in Turkey! So there are two nice beds, a clean bathroom, plent of bog roll, a TV and clean towels every other day. For what we paid this was fine. We had breakfast every morning off clean plates with clean cutlery. Nice. The kids weren't so keen on the continental breakfast but enjoyed the cereal and toast all the same.
The pool area - just outside of the restaurant. Can see all that's happening, not a huge pool but just big enough. Infact compared to the one next door it's huge! Bar open for as long as people are about (this includes the indoor one too) and the sunbeds were the usual plastic comfortable ones! Oh and if you step out of the pool on the far side and move about four/five feet you end up walking on the sand. Yes - you are on the beach.
Sea views - previous review said that you have to 'swing your neck 90 degrees' - what a load of rubbish. Some of the rooms have balconies on the side of the hotel but if you turn 45 degrees you can see everything for miles. Beautiful sea views. All the rooms can see the sea. We had one on teh front and one on the side and to be perfectly honest as long as you aren't looking at brick walls or building sites who cares?!!!
Location - ten minutes from the Dolphin Square (where most the nightlife is) but to get there you walk on one road down the beach front past the brilliant shops to get to it. And just because they can - the shops are still open when you are walking home again - at 2am (or whatever) in the morning. That means that you aren't carrying lots of bags in the daytim heat or through a load of bars, pubs and clubs. Lovely.
Yes I would go again. The youngest spent all him time on the watersports (with lifejackets) or in the pool and the eldest shopped till she dropped - (even if it was with heat exhaustion!).
One warning - if you don't like it too hot DO NOT GO TO THIS SIDE OF TURKEY.
Thanks,
Until next year -
M. Myerscough

Overall Hotel Rating:
We had read a bad review on the Altunakar Hotel after booking, and were a bit worried by what we might find.
When we arived we could not believe how wrong the review was. The hotel, room and bathroom were clean, the staff friendly, helpful and could not do enough for us.Our room overlooked the pool and beach, although rooms at the side would obviously not have the same view.
The cleaners were friendly and efficient and our room was cleaned every day
The pool was fairly large with a children's pool, and both were clean and sparkling. (Fresh water, not salt).
Our only complaint was that the water in the room was only hot after mid morning. To sum up, the Altunkar is not by any means a five star hotel, but offers a good standard of service and cleanliness, right on the beach.

Overall Hotel Rating:
The Hotel was basic but clean, clean towels and bedding regularly provided.
The food in the hotel catered for mainly for the home market , but was of a good standard. we did eat at the hotel 5 nights out of our 13 nights stay.
The staff where friendly but at times the hotel could have had more waiters on duty.
If you book a room facing the beach be prepared to pay an extra £3 per day for air conditioning even if the electric is off most of the time.
The resort
The beach outside the hotel was very dirty (putting it mildly). it was covered in bottle tops, cigarettes stmps, broken glass, emty crisp packets empty bottles etc. But what many may not notice it is used of a night by packs of dogs (up to 50 at one time) to do their dirties.
The sea water was clean and very inviting.
If you engoy being hassled - yes I mean 'HASSLED' every few yards this is the resort for you most of the shops the goods where of very cheap quality 'tacky'. all prices in sterling all menus in the restaurants in english mainly english type food. If you want experience 'Turkey' try another resort. This is my first visit to Turkey and if this is what Turkey is like I will never go again.
