This was a convenient stopover at the end of our holiday in Mauritius for us to judge for future visits. The hotel is worthy of its 4* - excellent service and friendly staff. The 50C heat and 100% humidity is an experience in itself! Can't walk about in this but taxis are cheap and plentiful we had a great city tour by minibus and visited museum (negligible entrance fee), strolled by Creek, took water taxi, saw all sights and visited souks. Not looking to buy any gold or sprices so can't comment on haggling for prices here but choice was phenomenal. Lots of hassle from 'independents' to buy fake watches and handbags but no aggression. This place is so safe to walk about, any time anywhere, male or female. No litter, no graffitti - how do they do it? We loved it. Our hotel guide Mohd Ashraf was superb (lots of contacts) took us on a tour of Jumeirah Beach Hotel (huge and commercial but luxurious)to the top with breathtaking views; it's sister like a Fort and with waterways (our favourite); the development offices, videos etc of The Palm, The Waterfront and The World. Jumeirah area absolutely gorgeous and will definitely re-visit. We ate in a Lebanese cafe (so friendly and great food, questionable hygiene but no matter as we have well-travelled stomachs); also in the hotel (city prices).
Tour operator had not pointed out change of flight to us or Gulf Tours (Rep in Dubai) who were excellent and sorted us out. Also did our city tour for us.
Negatives: 'Fly Emirates' - why?? The whole Mauritius/Dubai holiday was marred by Emirates whom we had always wanted to sample. Dont' bother as service no better; no mini toothpaste etc/or socks. On way back we had separate seats which has NEVER happened before. Very apologetic check-in guy said would put message through for eligible upgrade. When we got to boarding desk the very officious Emirates female said it was a full flight and many people were separated ";not just you";!! On board whole families with young children had been split up. We were treated like cattle.
Everything else fab and can't wait to re-visit.
