Very disappointed in this resort and hotel. We were warned that there was building work in the area, but nothing prepared us for the extent of it.

We were in the middle of a concrete jungle. Work went on 24/7. You could not walk anywhere as the pavements are cordoned off with tape and cones. The only way to get about is by taxi or car if you want to take your life in your hands.
The staff in the hotel were not very helpful, when we arrived they asked for a credit card which they swipe in case you leave without paying for extras. My purse was in one of our cases as we had just spent a week in the maldives where we did not need money. They would not let us go to our room to unpack and take the card down, we had to grovel on the floor, going through our cases until we found the purse. Not a good start. We were not told that restaurants had to be booked in the hotel, so we were turned away when we went to eat. The roads are absolutely awful. A 30 minute journey usually took 2 hours.
The gold souk was a frightening experience, we left after about 10 minutes as we were hassled constantly, they will not take no for an answer nor will they let you browse. The Madinat souk and the Emirates shopping mall are well worth a visit. If you are thinking of dining in the Burj, book on-line before you go. It is impossible to get in when you are there. They say the building work will be finished in 2010, but I would not advise anyone to go before 2012 to make sure it is all done. If we ever went back we would try either the Jumeirah Beach Hotel (not the Sheraton) or the Al Qasr. Both of these are in a more accessible part of Dubai.
Well, we went back to Dubai this year(2005), Once again right in the middle of August, The water park was still excellent, just as i remembered. the Sea just a crystal clear as it was last year. There is some serious development going on in Dubai at present...

Still Safe to get into a taxi ( beige ones are best). Everything is Well priced in Dubai. Last year we stayed in the golden sands apartments which were OK, this year was a special anniversary so we went a little upmarket. The hotel itself was AMAZING, ACCOMODATING STAFF, WONDERFULL FOOD, LUXURIOUS ROOMS WITHOUT GOING OTT.
Would like to go back in a few years to see the results of all this work, I'm sure it can only get better.
