Very clean well thought out serviced apartments. Very central and good for the centre of town. Only about 5 minutes walk. Everything that you need is included (inc breakfast) in the price. More space than a hotel, because you get a one bedroom apartment. Good bathroom with under floor heating & power shower. Cleaned very well daily and the cleaners even did our washing up (Dishwasher and washer dryer in the kitchen)

We travelled travelstyle, Chesterfield, to Eastbourne in August and stayed at the hotel Fairlands on Lascelles Road. The journey took 10 hours due to the fact we were taken on a detour to Southampton in order to drop off a driver that wanted to catch a ferry to the Isle of Wight. The accommodation was extremely basic and dirty, we had a very tiny bedroom with a 12” television perched on the top of a wardrobe, the bathroom filthy and the meals were miniscule which left us still feeling hungry e.g. breakfast consisted of a tiny piece of bacon, one cocktail sausage, a cherry tomato and an egg and on one occasion the evening meal was small bowl of freezing cold tomato soup due to a gas leak. At the beginning of our holiday there were no toilet rolls in the room. We asked for some but none were given to us until our final day.
The brochure misdescribed the holiday at Fairlands and stated ‘Beware, you will be pampered’.
We have visited many, many hotels all over Europe but this has to be the worst yet. In fact other holiday makers named it Fawlty Towers which was then reported back to the manager of the hotel.
To top it all we paid £299 each (£598 in total) then found out that other people in the party had paid £50 less per person than ourselves. That means we paid an extra £100 for the same holiday!
Edinburgh great city for a long weekend, lots to see and do.

Very pleased with the shandwick apartments, situated just off the end of Princes street and close to everything. Apartments were spotless and although basic were very comfortable. Reception staff very helpful, would definately stay there again.

I would recommend avoiding this hotel... booked a double for myself and a triple for my children. requested adjacent rooms having checked they existed by telephone prior to stay. Given rooms across the corridor when checking in. Double room had hardly enough room to move in. No-one available to help with bags when checking-in. Only staff in hotel at the time was receptionist. Windows in room let in cold air when closed. Wind howled round roof and rattled like badly.... couldn't sleep as floorboards creaked whenever anyone went past and walls paper-thin. Breakfast was pathetic. Went down to eat at 9.00 (had been advised it finished at 9.30) to find 1 rasher of bacon on buffet. Asked if more food was available and was told it would be coming...... some odd looking fried eggs turned up after ten minutes.... some cold beans another 10 minutes later and at about 9.25 some sausages. We had to ask twice for toast and tea. Advised that there would be no more bacon! Kids had long given up and didn't eat at all. Fruit provided on cold "selection" was off. Decided not to stay the two nights I had booked. The GM would not refund me the cost of the second night as I had not booked direct with the hotel. I was not prepared to pay for another night of no sleep and no breakfast and left without "chip & pining" my card. I was billed both nights anyway as the GM was adamant I had to pay for both nights regardless of their lack of service. Compalined to GM about the overall quality of my stay and got no sympathy or help with my predicament, I feel that all he cared about was getting my money.

Very dated hotel. Rooms shabby, windows not close properly. TV worked only on pre-set volume. Staff unhelpful. Overall hotel dated and in need of decoration and repair. Smelled old. Hotel either cold or very hot. House keeping continually arrived despite do not disturb signs and very early in morning. Entertainment - same on third night as first night. Definitely not as advertised on web site.

Great resort loads to do, the 'forbidden' show at the pleasure beach was free with our wristbands and was a great way to spent the evening. The pleasure beach is a fantastic funfair with tons of rides for all ageas. The italian job 'eat as much as you can' pizzeria was terrific value and definitely worth a visit. The horse and cart rides as a bit pricey and because I was facing forward in the carriage, I had the drivers back in front of me and no veiw of the illuminations - a tram would have been better. Very friendly people in the eateries. Make sure you take hats gloves scarves long johns etc etc no joke its freezing !!!

Our holiday was ruined the moment we arrived at our hotel: we had travelled for over 7 hours from the south in the most appalling weather conditions (last weekend 25th October 2008) we arrived later than expected/planned but still excited and upbeat. We rang the hotel doorbell and the door was opened by a stoney face man that immediately turned and walked back into the Hotel ignoring our 'Hi's' the lady standing behind the bar completely ignored us (just stared at the floor saying nothing) bit weird we thought. We were two mums with our 10 year old daughters. Is my car OK there ? my friend asked pointing to where she had parked her car. "It's OK, a bit old" replied the man who had let us in who then laid into us for being late, we were inconsiderate and we'd missed our dinner (we arrived at 5.30pm) I thought he was joking and said so. No he was NOT joking he replied and started ranting at us again in a very aggressive bullying manner, all the time the lady behind the bar stared at the floor saying nothing. It was surreal, we had just spent all day driving through a storm for this ?? The man started ranting about dinner being missed again, we told him we thought that dinner was at 5.30pm and that we had just made it in time - and we were really hungry- he almost exploded at this raising his voice telling us they had 'run this place for 3 years and dinner had never been at 5.30pm and always been at 5pm' Well Mr Richard Cooke, check the welcome pack in your rooms, it clearly states that dinner is at 5.30pm - we were gobsmacked when we saw this but didnt bother mentioning it: people like this don't listen. He then said "If you dont like it you know what you can do" I wish I hadnt paid the bill in advance because, believe me, I would have been out of there like a shot. I then said I didnt want to contine with this ridiculous conversation and asked if we could please just go to our rooms. Not until we had "sorted out breakfast" he demanded which, as I'm sure you can imagine, was the last thing on our minds. We were completely dumfounded by this 'welcome' and, quite frankly the rest of our stay at the Heywood House Hotel blurrs into insignificance as this first impression stayed with us throughout our stay. We felt very uncomfortable and spent as little time as possible in the Hotel as all four of us felt intimidated. We feel that had one of us been a man, we would not have been treated like this. Do yourself a big favour and stay elsewhere.

We paid £90 per night (room only) and the hotel was well worth this special offer price. We asked for a quiet room and got one. The windows had blackout blinds and curtains so nice and dark at night. There was a bath and a very powerful and hot shower. The bed was firm and there were extra pillows. Tea and coffee facilities replenished each day and a small fridge. Flat screen TV with many digital channels free of charge. No hairdryer. We didn't eat there although did have a drink in the bar which was pleasant enough. Excellent location with plenty of pubs/restaurants to visit in the evening without having to head into the city.
