"East Devon holiday review"

Overall Hotel Rating:

Open quote

Otter Falls is set in the tranquil and beautiful East Coast of Devon, about 10 minutes drive from the centre of Honiton and on the route to Sidmouth, Seaton and Lyme Regis. Otter Falls is aimed at families with teenagers or couples looking for a peaceful and relaxing holiday. The farmhouse we stayed in was about 150 years old, very spacious with excellent views across the lawn to the three lakes on site that hold carp, rudd etc. There are lodges dotted around these lakes and are ideal for teenagers interested in fishing or for older people looking for a relaxing fishing/hiking holiday. The downside is that although this place gets booked up year after year, and we met a couple who have been going there for the past 13 years, the owners don't seem keen on putting their money where its most needed. The farmhouse has 3 bedrooms and 1 on the groundfloor, however the damp in the building is so bad that the built in wardrobes were unusable (the smell was really bad) and the bottom row of kitchen cupboards require a deep intake of breath before attempting to open them. The interior is very dated with no thought given to furnishings or comfort. Given the price the owners charge through booking direct or throug Hoseasons, I can only assume profit is the name of the game. This is a shame as the other properties dotted around the courtyard have much better furnishings and seemed cosier and more welcoming. The farmhouse is ok for large families that don't mind the smell, but for us it was pretty overpowering. Having said all that, it of course didn't spoil our enjoyment of the area, the staff were friendly and helpful and the onsite swimming pool is superb. There is no play park or any facilities for small children, I wouldn't recommend Otter Falls for families with young children as you really are left to your own devices, which is great but also a worry having three lakes on site. The site also allows dogs which is fantastic for anyone that wants to holiday with their pets. We took our dog and used the lovely areas set out for dog walking with plenty of fido bins dotted around. Otter Falls is the perfect place to relax and totally unwind. We didn't hear a car or traffic noise at all for the whole week and there is no wi-fi or internet access; the perfect way to leave your gadgets at home and get back to nature. WARNING: turn your Sat Nav OFF at least 8 miles before nearing Honiton as none of them recognise Upottery or Rawridge - phone the reception desk at Otter Falls about half an hour before you get there and ask to speak to John who will give you the correct directions. Hoseasons don't offer this advice nor tell you the correct directions.
