We flew in to San francisco on a Virgin atlantic flight, which was OK. We had pre booked a Taxi on the internet before setting off, and after clearing imigration found the shuttle bus waiting to take us to the Sheraton. We stayed four nights in San francisco and enjoyed every day. We had booked Alkatraz through Blue and Gold Fleet again before we set off and the tickets are dispatched to you when you enter your details in either the machines at the pier or you can go to the kiosk.
We did all the tourist main sites this being our first visit to the west coast. We went to Golden gate park and the bridge. We did the cable cars and china town. We purchase a three day rover ticket, This allowed us to use all the transportation in the city from the trolly bus the cable car underground and the bus service. We sampled many of the bars and restaurants around the cannery and Pier 39. some are a little pricey but on the whole sevice and the food was good. After our fourth night we hired a car and set off to Monterey and stayed 2 nights in the Colton inn. The staff there are excellent frindly and helpful. On tuesday afternoons the main street is closed off for a farmers market. There is live music and all kind of stalls. We did the 17 mile drive and visited the Carmel area. From Monterey we set off for Yosemite.
We stayed at the Maripose Lodge in Maripose. There is not a great deal to do in the town, but the lodge is OK clean, and once again the staff are helpful. Restaurants that we tried where OK. Due to a land slip on the road to Yosemite, we had to go the long way around via Oakhust. This added about an extra 40 miles to the journey but the roads are good and the scenery is quite spectacular.
Once in the Yosemite national park, the size and scenery is just fantastic. In early May the tioga pass is still closed. Our next destination was death valley and the furnace creek lodge. So we had to motor down towards Bakersfield before heading across to Death valley. There is no competion for the restaurants so they have a captive clientele. Again the lodge is good clean and staff friendly. The last part of our journey was a week in Las vegas. We stayed south of the strip at the Gandview.Again never been to vegas so we did all the tourist points. We went in to many of the famous hotels. Ceasars palace probably my favourite. The buffet at the Golden Nugget is excellent value. Freemont street is worth a trip in the evening.
We did the helicopter over the canyon. We drove to the hoover dam and lake mead. Brain Adams was on at the Hilton during our stay. Tickets on the internet where expensive. a phone call to the Hilton ticket desk direct was very much cheaper. We also did the Rat pack show. There are ticket booths on the strip where you can buy tickets, for the shows, usually at half price. These are sold on the day, and better than paying full price. A short drive to the airport and Virgin atlantic home. The airport at las vegas does not have many facilities, but you can always have a last go on the slot machines.

Having spent first three days of our holiday in New York I didnt think things could get much better - how wrong I was.
San Francisco is one of the most fabulous places on earth. We arrived on an internal flight after a 6 hour trip from NY - totally worn out but excited. Virgin had upgraded our transfer to a limo which was fabulous.
The Sheraton is in an excellent spot within 5 minutes walk of Pier 39, friendly, clean and modern hotel. Was very cheap too.
We had prebooked Alcatraz on the net before leaving so we couldgo on the first boat over - this is at 9.30 and is best as you are 1st onto the island so it is notso busy. Alcatraz is fascinating - it is one of the best trips I have ever done and only costs around £10.
However, the best attraction is totally free - the sealions on pier 39 are cute, funny, entertaining and completely mad !!! Once you have got used to the smell you can watch them for hours.
shopping and dining is really good at Fishermans Wharf , Clam Chouder and Sourdough bread are the specialities.
SF is so beautiful with its cable cars, steep and windy streets and the golden gate bridge is out of this world - we walked to it from the Wharf which took circa 3 hours but you can get some fab pictures.
Weather was great at around 35 oC and food is gorgeous - the people are very friendly although there are a lot of homeless people. IHOP is great for breakfast - best pancakes ever and for the ";HappyDays"; diner experience go to Johnny Rockets.
We were only there 3 days and then it was onto Vegas which is great as its only 1 hr 20 by plane.
We certainly left our hearts in San Francisco !!!!
