caught the shuttle each way to/from hotel $11 each way
we visited most of the hotels on the strip and thought that the MGM was only bettered by the Luxor and Bellegio but the differences between the hotels is difficult to measure, they all try to have their own stamp and as such offer an amazing experience.
This was our first trip here and as you would expect there is a big learning curve to go through but the place is astonishing. An adult playworld to drink, gamble and see an amazing variety of shows. We stayed for 6 nights from 1/5/06 and could see Celine Dion, Tom Jones ,Elton John,Wayne Newton, and Rita Rudner plus a vast choice of acts ranging from the Rat Pack, The Blue Men to variety acts such as Penn/Tellar,Siegfried and the incredible Cirque Du Soleil,Ka, (one of four shows in Vegas) which we saw at our hotel $125 each but what an event to enjoy.
Our hotel struck us as typical Vegas, very large, well organised friendly staff with a large shopping area with a variety of eating options and shows.you can view tigers/lions /sharks /fish in your lobby or the next hotel. i think the MGM lobby including gambling areas would cover 15 football pitches. It sleeps 5005 with the same number of slot machines, this does not include the shops ,theatres, sportsroom with seats for 200 to bet on the events on TV or high roller siderooms, crap tables or card tables.
We had the option of 5 pools,Spas and a great lazy river.
We ate in, out, in a buffet, at a cafe and in a restaurant and we were only disappointed once on a coach meal near the dam.the choice and price range is limitless.
wWe went on one trip to the Hoover dam at $30 each plus $12 on a underground tour. our time on the coach was 6hrs and the driver was very friendly and in formative but the visit to a chocalate and cactus farm used too much time. out of 6 hrs 30 mins we came up from the tour inside of the dam to find we had 20 mins before we had to get back on the coach.not much time to walk the top or look around at lake mead or the colerado river. We then drove 3 miles to the Hacienda hotel to spend an hour and a half including a lunch that i would not offer to my dog.
when i go back to Vegas again im going to hire a car, pay a little more and spend as much time as i choose to at a location
This put me off going on a helicopter trip to the Grand Canyon. Why spend between $500-1000 for two to see something so wonderful and to have work to a schedule.
When we return we will spend less time in Vegas and hire a car to drive back to LA/SF via the dam, the canyon Yosemite Jellystone or whatever we choose. After all ,who,s holiday is it?
The strip is so long and busy that you need to consider the trolleybus or the deuce. The deuce goes to the limits of the town where some of the malls are.$5 each per 24 hr period but we found the times left a lot to be desired.must be the same the world over, you wait 30 mins(i am not joking)and 3 come along at once
car hire Budget $37 for a compact/$50 for a 4 wheel drive per day and fill the tank up before returning the car, petrol is now $3.10 per gallon and insurance is $30-45 per hire. this offers a lot of options.
Las Vegas is an amazing place.Lots to do and friendly, you are made to feel wanted and i found i felt safe anywhere despite the amount of drink consumed. I think it would be very hard work for parents to bring children to (what holiday is'nt) and not really suitable but good fun for adults, especially in groups.

If you like thrill rides go to the Stratosphere and do the rides at the top. Wicked. Did Grand Canyon helicopter tour but next time will do a more comprehensive one where you can have lunch in canyon.
The strip is awesome at night.
Only 2 tiny problems. Try to avoid weekends as Friday and Saturday nights are mobbed and when you buy a $3.99 steak, expect just that, a steak that is worth $3.99. Suppose we should have known what to expect. Viva Las Vegas.

We flew direct from Manchester and paid extra for Premiair Gold seats.Recomend this to all. It makes all the diff on such a long flight. The seats are much bigger, all drinks are free and you get your own personal TV with lots of films to choose from. The only problem we had was with the transfer, we had to wait over a hour for everyone to get on the coach, not really worth it as the strip is only 10 mins from airport and a taxi is around $12.
The hotel is amazing. It can take a while to find your way around but its worth it. Plenty of places to eat, you barely need to leave the hotel! One sugestion I have is to use the Monorail between hotels. If you get a 10 day pass the price isnt too bad but it gets you all over plus its air conditioned a must in Vegas!
There are more must sees than I can fit on here but please, please see the Bellagio fountains. Spectacular. I turned into a wimp the first time I saw them and got a lump in my throat!! Daft I know but once you have seen them you will see why.
All I can say is you have to see it to believe it with Vegas. Amazing!!!!!!

I took my mum for her birthday, we were out there from Sun - Thurs and although we had 15 hrs of flying via Washington it was well worth it.
Flight - We flew with BMI who were GREAT, the only downside was having to change at Washington Dulles where the Immigration queue was a nightmare, last time I came through here I missed my connecting flight and this time we just made it as our ongoing flight was late.
Hotel - MGM was really good, rooms a bit small and dark for such a big hotel, I have also stayed at the Monte Carlo and the rooms were much more impressive. The staff at MGM were so friendly and couldn't do enough to help, and the hotel as a whole was amazing!!! Great Pool also!
Grand Canyon - Last time I came I went on a helicopter trip which was amazing but this time we took an SUV tour which took 8 hrs Hotel to Hotel and I would really reccommend this tour. We went with a company called ATV Action Tours but actually booked on the internet through Looktours.com. Both companies could not have been more helpful and Ping our tour guide was a real character.
All in all you have to go, the dancing fountains at the Bellagio are not to be missed, I would really recommend food at Cheeseburger Oasis in the Aladin Hotel, V nice. Also although I cannot remember the name there is a little restaraunt on the strip right between New York New York and the Monte Carlo who do the BEST breakfasts and V cheap as eating in the hotel can be expensive, but be prepared for a 15-20 min wait, this place is popular.
I would love to go back to Vegas again very soon, but bring on the direct flights from Manchester!!!!

My husband and I got married in the MGM wedding chapel on a Friday evening after 1 weeks stay in the MGM and it was absolutely fantastic.
There were 18 of us travelling all together. The chapel is beautiful and the staff very helpful. The wedding package was a complete bargain and we were thrilled with the quality of everthing that was included in the package price. The photo's and DVD were very professional, the flowers were very pretty and we also got spa time and massages as part of the package. The spa was lovely although a little pricey for treatments - however, as the spa is rated in the top 10 in the USA, it was worth it.
One thing we were slighlty disappointed with was that we didn't get the option of a king size bed as promised in the Virgin brochure. Not a big problem - just felt a little seen off by Virgin's false advertising.
The MGM is the largest hotel in the world and it takes a day or 2 to get to know your way around the hotel. The pool area is unbelievable - I've never seen anything like it. There are many different pool areas (one for adults only, one with a lazy river - which was excellent - one for pool games etc). As we have been to Las Vegas before and saw a lot of the touristy things last year, we spent a lot of time at the pool this year - also to help get a good tan for the wedding.
Last year, we stayed at the Luxor which was cheaper than the MGM. Therefore, we were quite disappointed with the quality of the rooms. They were clean and well kept, but in comparison to the Luxor, they were substandard. The bathrooms were very basic and small. However, the hotel itself was far more impressive with a huge variety of quality restaurants and entertainment.
Some friends who came with us booked their holiday separately (via the MGM website for their room and Virgin Atlantic for the flight) and although they paid the same money, they had an upgraded room which was lovely. In the future, we will book like that as there really is no need to have a package deal to Vegas. The only thing you don't get is the transfer to/from the hotel but that is not needed. The Strip is about 8 minutes from the airport and costs less than $10.
Last year, we did the Grand Canyon trip by helicopter, but this year we did the extended trip where you actually get to stop and have lunch at the edge of the canyon and also go to the bottom and have a boat ride along the Colorado River. Although this years trip was obviously more expensive, it was so worth the extra cost. On last years helicopter trip, we only flew over and through the Canyon without stopping. We felt that you don't really get an appreciation of it until you stop and look over the edge or stop and look up from the bottom. If you are a bit wary of flying, I suggest a very early morning trip as the plane flight is very dodgy the hotter it is.
We love Las Vegas and will definitely be going back many more times - hopefully to stay in different hotels each time.
The first year we went, it took us a few days to really get into it and enjoy it. Looking back, we think it was because we were wandering around aimlessley going in and out of one casino to another to another etc. Without trying to sound too sad, we made a plan (things we wanted to see and places we wanted to go) and after that, we started to fall in love with it.
This year we went to see Penn and Teller at the Rio - which was disappointing. It was all old stuff we've seen before and was quite boring. We also saw Lance Burton (magician) at the Monte Carlo and that was 100 times better. Very entertaining and well worth the money. I would recommend picking up the free booklets and leaflets you can get in taxis and on the streets as there is so much to do in Vegas that these proved very helpful.
There were 2 children with us this year (young teenagers) and LV is not a good place for kids. There is so much they can't do and places they can't go, it became a bit of a military operation just to plan what we were going to do in the evenings. The hotels are very strict on children not stopping in the casino areas and there are no bars at all which were child friendly.
I can honestly say that Vegas is somewhere that has to be seen to be believed and everyone should go at least once.
