Should readers who wish to travel to the USA, and avoid the well known resorts, say Florida and California, do what we did and try the Northern Plains instead to see the real USA,there you will find friendship and a true likeness to the British people. We found that if you use Rapid City Airport Sth Dakota as a flying in base (YOU CAN FLY INTO THERE FROM MOST MAJOR CITIES)this is the most Central part to begin your hols.

From there you can hire a car and travel to the Badlands, Custer State Park, Mount Rushmore,Deadwood, home of Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane, they are both buried side by side in Boot Hill Cemetery, Keystone,Spearfish,Sturgis, and over the border into Wyoming Devils Tower, plus if you are an aviation enthusiast Ellsworth Air Force Base Musuem 6 miles from Rapid City.

As mentioned above we stayed at Super 8 Motels which if you are over 55 10% is deducted. We stayed at the Deadwood Motel which has an indoor swimming pool, hot tub and free Continental Breakfast thrown in for around $50 per room per night, interesting that when you have your breakfast, the fruit machines are being played 24 hours a day, even have these machines in the local supermarket.

So if you are interested in the REAL USA, check out the airfare prices from your local travel agent or the Internet for Rapid City ---do it. One further piece of advice, as most of these resorts are on high ground for example Deadwood 5500ft above sea level, during the day the temperature was 83 degrees, next morning there was an inch of snow on the car this is in Mid MAY, but it soon melts!!!!
